Rain: A book review by Bob Morris

Posted on: April 9th, 2013 by bobmorris RainPortrait of a Young Entrepreneur This is the most recent of ten books that Jeffrey Fox has written and is, in my opinion, his most entertaining. In the first part (Pages 1-128), Fox presents a business narrative in which a fictitious youth named Rain embarks on a brief but productive career as a newspaper boy. (Presumably Rain is Fox’s surrogate.) Like Forest Gump, he encounters a series of adventures but unlike Gump, he seems to have more “street smarts.” Fox cleverly introduces a number of challenges and opportunities to dramatize several basic business lessons. Then in the second part of the book (Pages 129-192), he shifts his attention to his reader whom he invites to compete “a series of analytical exercises anchored in each of Rain’s adventures. The exercises are designed to illuminate Rain’s entrepreneurial thinking and his rainmaking principles.” Actually, completing the 29 brief exercises does more than illuminate the Rain’s ”rainmaking principles”: It also enables the reader to make direct application of most (if not all) of them to her or his own circumstances.]]>

Rain: A book review by Bob Morris

Posted on: April 9th, 2013 by bobmorris

Note: I read and reviewed this book when it was published about four years ago and recently re-read it in combination with Secrets of Great Rainmakers as I now complete a revised marketing plan for the balance of this calendar year. Rain is my personal favorite among all of Fox’s books, although he published several other bestsellers after this one. I identify with the central character because I had two newspaper routes when I was Rain’s age. Also, I needed to reconnect with Fox’s unique insights on how to create rain, especially during a drought such as the current one that began years ago. If you need to generate some rain, check out this review I posted in 2005.

RainPortrait of a Young Entrepreneur
This is the most recent of ten books that Jeffrey Fox has written and is, in my opinion, his most entertaining. The exercises are designed to illuminate Rain’s entrepreneurial thinking and his rainmaking principles.” Actually, completing the 29 brief exercises does more than illuminate the Rain’s ”rainmaking principles”: It also enables the reader to make direct application of most (if not all) of them to her or his own circumstances.

I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book because when doing so, I recalled many of my own experiences when I was Rain’s age and growing up on the South Side of Chicago. I had one paper route that I completed in the morning and later added another in the afternoon. After two years, I also began to work three days a week (4-8 PM) at a newsstand near my home. After about another year, when summer vacation began, I stopping delivering papers but continued to work at the newsstand Monday through Friday, 4-8 PM, and caddied at a local country club each weekend. I certainly did not have Rain’s entrepreneurial inclinations. I was simply determined to earn as much money as I could. I also encountered slow pays and no pays, hostile dogs, and customers impossible to please. I also hated getting up mornings when the temperature was near zero and the winds off Lake Michigan nearby were howling or when I was delivering papers afternoons when the heat and humidity were each 90º or more.

How many boys and girls today deliver newspapers? I have no idea. Most of the newspapers in Chicago when I was growing up no longer exist. It seems that in most other major metropolitan areas, there are no evening newspapers and only one morning newspaper. Presumably child labor laws now limit the employment opportunities for those in the 10-15 age range. So, where can they have the experiences and learn the lessons that Fox portrays in this book? I have no idea. However, although younger readers may not be able to identify with many of the situations in which Rain finds himself, I think that they will enjoy reading this book. I hope that many of them also get a clearer sense of the importance of meeting obligations (e.g. being on time, completing tasks), keeping promises to others, being alert to learning opportunities, and meanwhile making whatever personal sacrifices may be necessary.

As I read Fox’s book, I also recalled several life lessons that Robert Fulghum shares in his first book, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten: Play fair, Don’t hit people, Put things back where you found them, Clean up your own mess, Don’t take things that aren’t yours, Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody, Wash your hands before you eat, When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together, and Be aware of wonder. Simple? Of course. Naïve? I don’t think so. Fox and Fulghum affirm many of the same values that can also be found in the world’s most venerated holy works. In my opinion, there is no other business principle that is more important than The Golden Rule. It is central to the culture of the world’s most highly admired companies. Moreover, it is no coincidence that – year after year — these same companies are also among the world’s most profitable and most valuable.

Those who share my high regard for Jeffrey Fox’s latest book are urged to check out several of his others, notably How to Get to the Top: Business Lessons Learned at the Dinner Table (2007). I also highly recommend his How to Become a Rainmaker (2000) and then Secrets of Great Rainmakers (2006) as well as Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography, Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, and Fulghum’s aforementioned book. To those in need of additional recommendations, I suggest these: David Whyte’s The Heart Aroused, Michael Ray’s The Highest Goal, James O’Toole’s The Moral Compass and then Creating the Good Life, and Bill George’s Authentic Leadership and then True North.

How My Favorite Author Taught Me To Ask Him To Come To Puerto Rico

Jan 23, 2013

I recently was a guest on John Lee Dumas’ EntrepreneurOnFire.com podcast and while the final interview won’t go live until March, it’ll be worth the wait. The story I have for you started over 10 years ago, but was prompted by the interview that opened up a wild rehashing of memorable career-shaping events from the early 2000′s.

One of John’s common questions for the interviewee is to tell the audience what their favorite business book is. I gave two answers: “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill (I recently did a re-read of this old school book) and “How to Land Your Dream Job“, a book by Jeffrey Fox I read as a college intern.

I constantly reference the Fox book when talking to people looking to make a career change as I have always felt like it was written directly for my grand ambition: stand out, be unique, go big or go home.

At the time I read it, I had no idea that one day we’d be hanging out in Puerto Rico as a result. Here’s how the chain of events kicked off.

My internship professor at Bentley University recommended the book when I was looking to land a technology internship but coming up empty. I read it, landed my first gig (an eventual 6+ year career progression at SaaS company WhippleHill) and eventually was brought into Dyn to run sales and marketing at a time when both needed a real identity. (Here’s some background on how that’s gone through the years.)

The night after the aforementioned podcast interview, I decided to look up Fox to see if he had written anything else. To my great (and what should have been obvious) surprise, he had written ELEVEN books — all classic titles and all written for people like me. I bought them all and dove in.

I came across his email address, dropped him a brief note to thank him for his influence and went to bed thinking that was that. He responded via email an hour later, thanking me right back. He let me know he’d call to chat the next day, so we could get to know each other.

He was humbled. I was honored.

We talked and shared our career journey. His was longer than mine, but they shared a common thread of hard work, commitment and big dreams. Feeling inspired, I invited him to come to Puerto Rico this weekend to be the guest speaker for our 1st Annual “Baller’s Club” (our version of President’s Club for our top ranking 2012 sales reps).

I asked because when I was a college student unsure of my future, his book taught me to ask. He said yes because he knew his books were his resume and they worked. He confirmed my intrinsic belief that he wrote the book for people just like me.

I look forward to sharing this story with our top sales people and listening closely to Jeffrey discuss his career and other books like “How to Become a Rainmaker” and “How to Be a Fierce Competitor” and inspire us all to continue to raise the bar on our ambition.

Mr. Reiss, who was recently featured on CNBC’s Squawk Box talking about the new leadership category of Transformative CEOs, provides this definition: “A transformative CEO creates new value that reinvigorates a company, reinvents an industry or reboots society.

“I believe by disseminating the wisdom and best practices of transformative CEOs, we can help executives and organizations achieve significantly greater success.”

Special guest Peter Cuneo and his wife, Maris, attended. Mr. Cuneo is one of the 44 CEOs featured in The Transformative CEO and has turned around seven companies, including Black & Decker, Remington and Marvel.

Lessons and tips from game-changing CEOs http://dsmagency.com/?p=507 http://dsmagency.com/?p=507#comments Wed, 19 Sep 2012 13:33:21 +0000 http://dsmagency.com/?p=507 As seen on Investors.com:

Transformative CEOs Provide A Blueprint To Follow

By MICHAEL MINK, FOR INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY

Just like top runners, great CEOs lap average performers. Jeffrey Fox, who co-wrote “The Transformative CEO” with Robert Reiss, points to Peter Cuneo, who took over Marvel Entertainment in 1999, led its stock on a rocket run and guided the firm toward its $4 billion pickup by Walt Disney (DIS) in 2009.

Lessons and tips from game-changing CEOs:

Be fast and accurate. When Rick Goings took over as Tupperware Brands (TUP) president in 1992, he found a company hemorrhaging cash. He asked for a quick analysis so he could stop the bleeding.

“The whole of what we try to indoctrinate in our culture, from the Marine Corps, is the 70% solution,” Goings told IBD. “Once you have about 70% of the information, trust your instincts. Your instincts are based on your experience.”

Goings took over as Tupperware’s CEO in 1997 and still emphasizes that need for speed, with signs at Orlando, Fla., headquarters that say “Fast and Right.”

The plastic-container firm has responded with double-digit profit growth in 10 of the past 13 quarters.

Acquire talent. Goings avoids following companies that swerve from what’s most important. “Too much focus has been on strategy, on techniques, financing, etc. It has not been on how to create people,” he said. “All a company is is a collection of people. Recruit the best ones, empower them, develop them, and that’s where you’ll get results in a company.”

Go at it. Goings zeros in on right now. “Time is a scarce resource,” he said. “Identify and do the things that matter most, and let the other things go.”

Be true. To Tupperware’s 2.7 million independent direct sellers, “we emphasize and teach authenticity,” Goings said, adding that authentic people have the trust to inspire sales teams and build retention.

Innovate. It’s a crucial trait for transformative CEOs. One, says Fox, is Dan Amos, CEO of Aflac (AFL), who made the call that put his company on the national map: using the quirky duck in its TV ads. The campaign resulted in Aflac’s brand awareness rising from 11% to 93%.

Make difficult calls. Leadership for transformative CEOs is not a popularity contest, Fox said: “Turning around a dysfunctional culture, rescuing a dying company, is not for the needy personality. Tough decisions will never be wildly popular.”

Create a top culture. “The transformative CEO is obsessed with maintaining and protecting a winning one,” said Fox. “They hire to their culture and get rid of even superstars if they are malignant to it.”
